Kindermusik for the Young Child is presented in two consecutive years. This program is designed to prepare the child for later instrumental lessons and teaches rhythm notation and note recognition as well as singing, movement and creativity in the context of the musical classroom. Levels 1 (fall) and 2 (spring) are presented in the first year to children of 4 ½ to 5 ½ years. Levels 3 (fall) and 4 (spring) are presented in the second year of the program in classes held in the late afternoon to school aged children of 5 ½ to 6 ½ years. It is recommended that year one be taken before year 2, however, children that are of the appropriate age may join the second year of the program, without having previously taken year 1 (levels 1 and 2).

Kindermusik for the Young Child
Level 2 (Year 1)

In the second level of this 1 hour class, we will continue to learn more about the musical staff. In level 1, we learned the first two notes of high C and A, we will add three more notes to our repertoire as we learn to play songs on our glockenspiel and play in ensemble with others in the class, adding percussion instruments to keep the beat. We will continue to work on recognition of rhythm notation – quarter notes, and rests and eighth notes. In addition we will learn about the brass, string and woodwind families of the orchestra as we learn how sound is produced by these instruments, and how the whole orchestra creates the story of “Peter and The Wolf”. This class provides the child with the basics of musical notation and depends on singing and matching pitch to help the child discover his or her singing voice. Your child’s curriculum package includes the continued use of the glockenspiel from level 1, and a folder of materials including games and activities to reinforce the concepts learned in class and at home.
